JAKIM Making Preparation On Halal Logo Ruling
KUALA LUMPUR Oct 19 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Islamic Development Department (JAKIM) is making careful preparation to implement a rule requiring all to use only the halal logo issued by JAKIM, effective Jan 1.
Its director-general Datuk Othman Mustapha said among preparations was a simulation to test the readiness of its officers to implement the new rule.
He said the simulation would be implemented nationwide for two months from next month.
"The simulation is important to ensure clients will get the best service. Jakim has procured the equipment required to meet the need of clients," he said in an interview in a programme on Radio 24.
He said JAKIM's medium-term plan was to make halal consumer items like cleaning materials, makeups and pharmaceuticals to elevate the halal industry.
"The move is important to educate consumers to get food and other items which are halal, clean and of quality," he said.
Last month, Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said the rule on the halal logo was a follow up to the enforcement of the Trade Descriptions Act 2011 on Nov 1.
The amendment to the act was approved in parliament in July.
He said eating premises, restaurants, hotels and those, whom prior to this, were using halal logos not issued by Jakim, needed to make fresh applications, as their halal logos would be void after Jan 1.
